Mississippi:
Republicans in the Legislature in June 2013 blocked plans to expand Medicaid to an additional 300,000 state residents under the ACA. Senate Republicans, under the leadership of their Governor Phil Bryant, rejected a Medicaid expansion plan that was expected to insure an additional 300,000 people in the state, the day after House Republicans rejected a similar plan. But lawmakers came within just days of failing to re-up on the existing Medicaid plan that covers nearly 700,000 of the state’s neediest residents. The votes to save Medicaid at all came just a few days before the program was set to expire, after Bryant called for a special legislative session that began Thursday to deal with the impending crisis. Democrats forcefully pushed an alternative expansion plan, refusing to provide the votes they controlled–necessary because Medicaid could not be reauthorized without a super majority–unless Republicans would at least hold a vote on their plan.
